The Federal Ministry of Information and Culture has stressed the need to inculcate the culture of trust through media literacy among the Nigerian youth.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Culture, Lydia Shehu Jafiya, made the call in a speech she presented at the special session on “Talking Across Generation (TAGe) on media and information literacy (MIL)” at the ongoing Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week in Abuja.
“To achieve this, we must be deliberate about making youth a part of the policy-making process,” she said. “the older generation needs to be accessible to discussions with the upcoming generation, especially as regards the critical component that makes up MIL.”
Ms Jafiya stressed that youth, policymakers, and educators should be motivated to embrace MIL. According to her, it is a veritable means to empower the youth to take informed decisions and improve overall capacities for socio-political and economic gain.
“MIL should equip our youth with the skill set and innovative minds to their all in national development by trusting the system. We empower them on how best to analyse any informed situation encountered and take informed decisions critically.”
She expressed delight at the organiser’s decision to focus some topics in the MIL week on youth. She added that as a government official who engages in policy initiation, design, formulation, implementation and processing, she understands the need for stakeholders to input in policy making.
